Hammer Price:
£250

18th Century, Kent, Gravesend, Denton’s Naval Penny, 1797, sailing barge, reverse crowned coronet (DH 1). Struck from reverse die in damaged state, good fine and extremely rare (£100-150)

Usually seen only in extremely fine or better condition – the specimen in the Jan collection sold for £860 in 1983, and a comparable example in the Noble collection realised Aus $2450 in 1998. It would seem likely that the damage to the reverse die explains the rarity of the issue
