Arthur Richard Dring was born in Cardiff on 3 August 1931. At some stage either prior to or during his naval career he suffered the amputation of a thumb. After attending the National Sea Training School, Gravesend he passed into the Merchant Navy in March 1948 with the rating of ‘Junior Catering’. He served as an Assistant Steward on a number of vessels. In 1951 he sailed to the Far East and served in Korean waters on the R.F.A. Wave Prince - a Ministry of War Transport Oiler. Dring continued to serve until 1957 when he left the Merchant Navy. He died in Gravesend, Kent, aged 71 years. With copied service papers including photocopied photograph.
