Hugh Stevenson Campbell was born in Glasgow, Lanarkshire on 22 February 1925. In 1943 he joined the Royal Navy as a Ordnance Artificer 4th Class and served in the Atlantic. At the end of the war he emigrated to Australia and on 31 February 1951 joined the Australian Navy in Sydney. He was posted to H.M.A.S Tobruk which, in August 1951 sailed to Japan to join the United Nations Forces for Korean War Operations. H.M.A.S. Tobruk was one of two Australian Battle Class destroyers to serve in Korea. During her six operational patrols she carried out pin-point bombardments on both coasts of Korea and hit trains, railways, railway bridges and troop concentrations. When she returned to Australia on 22 February 1952 she had steamed some 39,000 miles and fired 2,316 rounds from her 4.5 inch guns. Hugh Stevenson left the Australian Navy on the 12 February 1954.
