William Poole was born in Keynsham, Somerset, in April 1876, and entered the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer 4th Class in October 1897. Awarded the L.S. & G.C. Medal in November 1912, he was advanced to C.E.R.A. 1st Class in April of the following year, while serving in Hong Kong.

By the outbreak of hostilities in August 1914, Poole was serving in the torpedo boat destroyer H.M.S.
Spiteful but he removed to the battleship Implacable in October 1916 and served in a similar capacity until coming ashore to Victory II in August 1917, in which period he was mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 25 May 1917 refers). Then in April 1918 Poole rejoined the Implacable, and added the M.S.M. to his accolades for his subsequent ‘services in the Northern Patrol Force (anti-submarine flotillas) between 1 July and 11 November 1918’ (London Gazette 24 March 1919 refers). He was finally demobilised in April 1920.
