Four: Stoker Petty Officer F. S. Warner, Royal Navy, a submariner of 1912-vintage who was mentioned in despatches for his part in a rare “sub-on-sub” victory in the G. 2 in October 1918

Frederick Stanley Warner was born in Maresfield, Sussex in February 1880 and entered the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class in May 1900. Entering the fledgling submarine service in May 1912, as a recently promoted Stoker Petty Officer, he was borne on the books of the submarine depot ship H.M.S. Rosario on the the outbreak of hostilities in August 1914.

Following similar appointments in Dolphin and Maidstone, he joined the submarine G. 2 in January 1916, and remained actively employed in her until the War’s end, in which period he received his L.S. & G.C. Medal in May 1916.

Operating out of Blythe with the 11th Submarine Flotilla, G. 2 achieved a notable “sub-on-sub” victory on 27 October 1918, when she torpedoed and destroyed the German minelaying submarine U-78 in the Skagerrak.

Warner was subsequently mentioned in despatches ‘for services in action with enemy submarines’ (London Gazette 15 February 1919 refers), but was invalided ashore with an eye complaint in March 1920.
