John Thomas Hayes was born in Rochester, Kent and enlisted at Leeds, W. Yorkshire. Serving in the 8th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment, he was killed in action, France/Flanders, on 7 August 1916, aged 32 years. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. He was the son of John and Rosemond Hayes, of 2 Humane Place, Low Road, Hunslet, Leeds and husband of Mary Ann Walton (formerly Hayes), of 6 Ravensburgh Street, Kirkstall Road, Leeds.
