Joseph Stringer Gilliard was born in Longford, Ireland on 6 December 1891. Serving in the Irish Guards he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 7 March 1915; he was discharged on 26 July 1915. Moving to Canada, living at 47 Highfield Road, Toronto, employed as a Munitions Worker, he attested for the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force on 14 December 1916. On his attestation paper he stated he had previously served in the Irish Guards for 319 days.
