1914-15 Star (St. Surg., R.N.V.R.); British War and Victory Medals (St. Surg., R.N.V.R.) extremely fine (3) £400-500

William George Barras, from Govan, graduated in medicine in 1899 and three years later took the degree of M.D. Being a member of the R.N.V.R., he was mobilised with the onset of war and served aboard the pre-dreadnought battleship Lord Nelson in the Dardanelles. He served aboard the battleship Vanguard at the battle of Jutland. He was killed aboard the same vessel when she blew up, due to an internal explosion, when lying at Scapa Flow on 9 July 1917. Out of a compliment of 670, only one officer and two seamen were saved.
