Frederick James Pettingal was born on 16 March 1828, and qualified as Licentiate of Medicine and Surgery (India) at Calcutta in 1848. He was appointed Sub-Assistant Surgeon at Sang on 1 November 1848, which position he held until 20 February 1856, when he was appointed Assistant Surgeon. He qualified as a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons (M.R.C.S.) in 1855, and was promoted Surgeon on 20 February 1868.

He served in the Field Hospital of the Army of the Punjab in 1848-49, during which campaign he proceeded with a detachment of sick and wounded to the depot hospital at Ferozepore, and at the close of the campaign with sick and wounded at Meerut.
