Wilfred Malleson was born on 8 September 1866, the son of the Rev. E. Malleson, Rector of Great Bookham, Surrey. He was educated at Wimbledon and R.M.A. Woolwich. Malleson joined the Royal Artillery in 1886 and transferred to the Indian Army in 1904. He was for six years on the staff of Lord Kitchener as head of the Intelligence Branch, Indian Army H.Q. He accompanied the Mission to Kabul under Sir Louis Dane, 1904-05 and served on the General Staff of India until January 1914. Awarded the C.I.E. in 1910. Malleson was Chief Censor of India, August-October 1914; Inspector-General of Communications, British East Africa, October 1914-January 1915; on a Special Mission to the Belgian Congo, January-April 1915; in command of a brigade and temporarily, a division, in British East Africa 1915-16 and was mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 30 June 1916) and awarded the C.B. in 1916. General Malleson was head of the British Military Mission to Turkistan, 1918-20 - mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 5 June 1919) and served in the Third Afghan War 1919 for which he was created a K.C.I.E. General Malleson retired from the Indian Army in 1920 and died on 24 January 1946.
