George Edward Peter Thorneycroft 1909 - 1994 was a long standing member of the Conservative Party becoming President of the Board of Trade in 1951, Chancellor of the Exchequer 1957 but resigned in 1958 along with Enoch Powell and Nigel Birch. Returned to the Cabinet in 1960 but lost his seat in the 1966 Election.  Received a life peerage and became Chairman of the Conservative Party under Margaret Thatcher 1975 - 81.
