‘The committee, after consideration of a recommendation by the Chief Constable, agreed that the Corporation Medal for Bravery be awarded posthumously to Robert Mohamed, 7 Lethamhill Place, Glasgow, and to Peter Ferguson, 8 Muiredge Terrace, Baillieston, William Mitchell, 4 Millerfield Place, Glasgow, and James Fleming, 649 Old Shettleston Road, Glasgow, all for bravery in saving the life of a young boy who had fallen into the River Clyde on 8th March, 1971.’ (ref: Magistrates Committee’s Minutes, 31 August 1971).

Stewart Niven, aged 3 years, of 690 Springfield Road, Glasgow, fell into the River Clyde near Riverside School, Parkhead, Glasgow. Robert Mohamed (Mohamet), aged 45 years, a Labourer working nearby on a wall at Belvidere Hospital, dived into the river when he heard the child’s screams. Trying to reach him, he was swept away and disappeared underwater. Within seconds, Mr Mohamed’s work-mate and non-swimmer arrived at the scene and called for help. Two passers-by, Peter Ferguson, aged 30 years, and William Mitchell, aged 24 years, attracted by the shouting, dived in and brought the child to safety.
