Stewart Maxwell Macnaghten was born in Hampstead, Middlesex on 25 May 1880, the son of Alfred Hill Macnaghten and Arabella Marie (nee Betts). He was educated at Eton College, 1893-1899. Formerly a Lieutenant in the 7th Battalion K.R.R. (Militia), he was appointed a 2nd Lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion K.R.R.C. in June 1900 (London Gazette 29 June 1900). Serving with them in South Africa, he died at Heidelburg on 26 June 1901, suffering from gangrene, following the amputation of the right arm, an operation necessitated by the result of an accident. He was buried in Heidelburg Cemetery, Cape Colony. With a folder containing comprehensive copied research.
