Afghanistan 1878-80, no clasp (69,B/613 Drumr. J. Martin, 1/18th Regt.) contact marks, nearly very fine £90-120

Joseph Martin was born in Knocknamuckly, Co. Down. A Weaver by occupation, he attested for the Army at Lurgan, 7 October 1870, aged 18 years. Initially posted to the 3rd Foot, he was tried and imprisoned for perjury in 1874. Transferred to the 1/18th Regiment in September 1874 and appointed a Drummer in January 1878. Served in India, October 1874-April 1880; Afghanistan, May 1880-March 1881; India, March 1881-September 1884; Egypt, September 1884-September 1885 - for which he was awarded the Afghanistan Medal with no clasp; Egypt and Sudan Medal with clasp for The Nile 1884-5, and the Khedive’s Star. Martin was discharged as a Corporal in March 1889. With copied service papers.
