Michael O’Brien was born in Clogheen, Clonmel, Co. Tipperary. A labourer by occupation he attested for the Royal Irish Regiment at Waterford on 30 November 1883, aged 19 years. With the 2nd Battalion he served in India, March 1885-April 1891. He was transferred to the Army Reserve in April 1891 but was struck off for absence in October that year.
