South Africa 1834-53 (Thos. Atwell, 1st Bn. Rifle Bde.) some edge bruising and contact marks, very fine £350-400

Thomas Atwell was born in Bristol. A Baker by occupation, he attested for the Rifle Brigade at Bristol on 24 February 1848, aged 19 years. He served in the 1st Battalion, February 1848-March 1855, seeing service in South Africa during the 1st Kaffir War. Atwell was transferred to the 3rd Battalion in April 1855 and was discharged on 28 July 1856 as a consequence of ‘unfitness for service’. The above was his only medal.
