Eadgar (959-975), Penny, Bust Crowned type, East Anglian style, no mint name, Ælfger, elfger monetai, 1.46g/3h (CTCE – ; N 750; S 1138). Some light curved surface marks on obverse, otherwise nearly extremely fine on a full round flan, the moneyer unrecorded in the main references, extremely rare £3,500-4,000

The name Ælfger seems to be unrecorded, not just for the reign but for the whole Anglo-Saxon period.

The curved marks form a geometric pattern on the obverse, this seemingly on the flan before the coin was struck. On the reverse, similar arcs seem to be on the die rather than the coin. These presumably would have acted as a guide to the die-cutter
