Leading Aircraftsman R. L. Johnson served with 55 Squadron as an Air Gunner from October 1939, and accompanied the squadron to Egypt early in 1940. From September 1940 to February 1941, he participated in eleven bombing raids in Blenheims against targets in North Africa, including several against Tobruk.
