Charles John Oates was lost aboard H.M. Submarine E5 sometime after 6 March 1916 when she failed to return from a patrol in the Heligoland Bight. The cause of her loss was never ascertained, but she was last seen in an area that was known to have been heavily mined. Sold with copied service papers.
