Pair: Sergeant Walter Hope, 90th Foot and Middlesex Volunteer Rifle Company

South Africa 1877-79, clasp, 1877-8-9 (1230 Pte., 90th Foot); Volunteer Force Long Service, E.VII.R. (5636 Sjt., 16th Middx. V.R.C.) contact marks, otherwise nearly very fine (2) £300-350

Originally enlisted as William Harrison. Served in Cape Colony from October 1877 to March 1878 and then to payment of the Mounted Infantry Corps. Sold with six photocopy pages of muster rolls, January 1880 to March 1881, which show him as William Harrison with the same service number and permission to change his name to Walter Hope. He is later shown as having deserted. He appears on the rolls of both the 90th Foot and the 2nd 24th Foot, his entry in the latter roll giving his number as ‘1457’, his entitlement to the clasp ‘1877-78’, and the comment ‘No medal. Deserted from 90th Foot. See also 1230 Pte. W. Hope 90th Regt.’ His medal and clasp is, however, verified on the roll of the 90th Foot.
