A mounted group of seven attributed to Lieutenant T. W. J. W. Howard, D.S.O., Thorneycroft’s Mounted Infantry, comprising Distinguished Service Order, V.R., gold and enamels; B.S.A. Company Medal, for Matabeleland 1893, 1 clasp, Rhodesia 1896; Q.S.A., 2 clasps, Rhodesia, Relief of Ladysmith; K.S.A., 2 clasps; Natal 1906, clasp, 1906; British War & Victory Medals, mounted as worn, the first with chips to both wreaths, otherwise good very fine (7) £150-200

Lieutenant Thomas Walter John Wright Howard served in the Bechuanaland Border Police and took part in the Matabele War of 1893. He volunteered to ascertain the fate of Alan Wilson’s party, Shangani River. In 1896 he served during the Matabele Rebellion (Medal with clasp), and he joined Thorneycroft’s Mounted Infantry at the beginning of the Boer War. He was dangerously wounded at Spion Kop, and, for gallantry, was awarded the D.S.O. He served in the Zululand Rebellion in 1906 and during the Great War.
