Army of India 1799-1826, 1 clasp, Bhurtpoor (W. Dougan, 59th Foot) short hyphen reverse, officially impressed naming, contact marks and edge bruising, otherwise nearly very fine £450-550

William Dougan was born at Bridgton, Lanarkshire, Scotland, and enlisted into the 59th Foot on 25 June 1823, aged 17 years. He volunteered into the 16th Lancers on 20 December 1828, and served abroad ‘In the East Indies from 11th May 1824 to 4th Feby. 1843; Served throughout the campaign in Affghanistan and at the assault and capture of Ghuznee in 1839, and served in the 59th at the capture of Bhurtpore 1826.’ He was discharged in February 1847 in consequence of ‘his being unequal to the active duties of a Dragoon’, his general conduct being described as ‘that of a bad soldier frequently tried by Court Martial for drunkenness and insubordination.’ Sold with copy discharge papers.
