Stephen (1135-1154), Penny, Cross Moline type, Hereford, Edwine, edpine : on : he [–], 1.04g/1h (Mack –; N 873; S 1278). Slightly bent, otherwise nearly very fine, excessively rare, the moneyer unrecorded for the reign £800-1,000
At times an Angevin stronghold during the Anarchy, Hereford was in royal hands between c. 1138-1143. Cut off from a supply of dies from London, most of the coins, like this one, are of a distinctive, and often crude, local style. Edwine is a published Hereford moneyer for Henry I type 15 (BMC 226-7) but this is the first known coin for the following reign
Another coin of BMC type I by this moneyer was recorded in the BNJ Coin Register 1994, no. 263
