Samuel Trotter was killed in action at Rouges Bancs on 18 December 1914, while serving in the 2nd Battalion, Scots Guards. The bitter fighting between the enemy and 20th Brigade at Rouges Blancs resulted in three V.C.-winning acts of bravery in as many days, among them a comrade of Trotter, Private James MacKenzie. Both men are commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial in Belgium; the whereabouts of the recipient’s 1914 Star are unknown.
