George Tierney was born in Salford, Lancashire; lived in Lower Broughton, Manchester and enlisted at Manchester. As a Private in the Manchester Regiment he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 18 November 1915. As a Lance-Corporal in the 2nd battalion he was killed in action on 11 January 1917. having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
