Appointed a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Fusiliers on 17 October 1914 and advanced to Temporary Lieutenant in June 1915. Appointed a Flying Officer (Observer) in the R.F.C. in December 1916 and Adjutant and Temporary Captain in November 1917. On 1 April 1918 he was ranked as a Captain in the R.A.F.; promoted to Flight Lieutenant in March 1938 and Squadron Leader in December 1941.
