William Francis Tindall was born in Camberwell, London on 23 April 1879. He entered the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class on Pembroke II in April 1899 and was advanced to Stoker in August the same year. Appointed Leading Stoker 2nd Class in February 1903 when on Goldfinch; Leading Stoker 1st Class in July 1905 when on Repulse and Stoker Petty Officer in July 1906 when on Illustrious. Appointed to Acting Chief Stoker in March 1914 when on London. He served as such on H.M.S. Alert, March-August 1914, for which service he was awarded the Persian Gulf clasp and in May 1914 the long service medal. Tindall attained the rank of Chief Stoker in October 1914 when on Dartmouth. He served as such aboard the battleship Royal Oak, May 1916-September 1920, and saw action at the battle of Jutland. Pensioned ashore in 1921. With copied service papers.
