Joseph Griggs was born in the Parish of St. George’s, London. He was attested for service in the Grenadier Guards on 16 May 1873, aged 12 years. He served as a Boy, May 1873-March 1876. Ranked as a Private, April 1876-February 1880, he was then appointed Drummer, seeing service as such with the 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards in Egypt, July-November 1882 and at the battle of Tel-el-Kebir. He claimed his discharge on 12 January 1889. With copied service papers.
