Edward Litton Luther was born in Dublin on 24 September 1866, the son of the Rev. Canon John Fitzmaurice Luther, M.A. He was educated at Portarlington, Ireland; Westward Ho, Devon and Trinity College, University of Dublin, gaining the degrees and diplomas B.A., M.B., B.Ch., B.A.O., L.M., M.D. He was House Physician and later Hon. Physician to Wide Bay & Burnett Hospital, Queensland. He was also Surgeon-Major of the Army Medical Service of the Queensland Defence Forces and Australian Commonwealth Forces 1892-1900; Surgeon-Major of the Queensland Contingent, South African Field Force, 1900-02, and Surgeon-Major and Senior Medical Officer, South African Constabulary, 1902-08. Also Surgeon to Lady Musgrave Lying-in Hospital. From 1909 he was Medical Officer and Public Vaccinator for the Puddletown District of Dorchester.

With three brass S.A.C. buttons and four brass crown emblems and with copied research.
