Joshua Edwards was born in the West Indies. A Clerk by occupation, he attested for the Infantry at Aldershot on 6 April 1878, aged 20 years. He was posted to the Army Hospital Corps and promoted Corporal in February 1880 and to Sergeant in January 1883. Re-engaged as a Sergeant for the Medical Staff Corps in April 1887. Promoted to 2nd Class Staff Sergeant in August 1889; 1st Class Staff Sergeant in April 1894 and Sergeant-Major in May 1896. He was discharged at Woolwich having completed his second period of service on 2 April 1899. During his military career he had served overseas in South Africa, January 1881-January 1882; Egypt, August 1882-May 1883; Ceylon, May 1883-April 1887, and Bermuda, November 1896-January 1899. Awarded the L.S. & G.C. Medal in 1897. With copied research.
