Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 3 clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Belfast (6742 Pte. W. Campbell, Royal Scots.) edge bruising, good very fine £70-90

William Campbell was born in Renfrewshire. A Labourer by occupation and a member of the 4th Battalion Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, he attested for the Royal Scots on 22 May 1899, aged 18 years, 2 months. With them he served in South Africa, May 1900-November 1902 and India, November 1902-April 1907. In early 1905 he was sentenced to 28 days imprisonment for ‘Using insubordinate language to his superior officer. Campbell was transferred to the Army Reserve in May 1907 and discharged on 21 May 1911. However, in October 1908 he was again in trouble, this time given 7 days imprisonment by the civil authorities for obscenity. Campbell was awarded the Queen’s medal with three clasps and King’s medal with two. With copied service papers.
