Martin Farrell was born at Mullingars, Westmeath, and enlisted into the 11th Light Dragoons at Dublin on 16 March 1822, aged 18, a Blacksmith by trade. He served abroad at Meerut and Cawnpore, in the East Indies, for fifteen years 7 months, and was present at the siege and capture of Bhurtpoor. He served as a Farrier with the regiment but never advanced beyond the rank of Private. He suffered frequent attacks of fever in India which undermined his health and, when back in England, he was tried and convicted by District Court Martial for habitual drunkenness in August 1840 and imprisoned for 3 months. Farrell was finally discharged at Horse Guards on 27 October 1846. Sold with copied discharge papers.
