The statue to General Calixto García (1839-98), still stands, lost on an island in the middle of a dual carriageway. Felix Weihs de Weldon (1907-2003), Austrian-born American sculptor, best known for the Iwo Jima [Marine Corps] Memorial in Washington, where there is also an equestrian statue of Simon Bolivar
