Carlsberg, Denmark's first lager beer, was launched on 10 Nov. 1847 by Captain J.C. Jacobsen in Valby, a small town on a hill overlooking Copenhagen. It was named after his son Carl and 'berg', which when translated means 'on a hill'. In 1871 Jacobsen's son, Carl, carried on his father's work by setting up another brewery, Ny Carlsberg (New Carlsberg), annexed to the existing Carlsberg brewery. In 1906 the two Carlsbergs merged to form Carlsberg Breweries. Carlsberg and their Danish rival Tuborg merged in 1970 to form United Breweries, the group now known as Carlsberg AS. Today, Carlsberg lager is sold in over 130 countries worldwide, and 1 million pints are sold in the UK every day
