Norway, Norge’s Frigjørelse [Norway’s Freedom], 1905, a light bronze medal by T. Olsen, seated female figure greeting naked artisan and naked boy holding flag of Norway, reverse winged Victory over scene of Norway’s industry, including locomotive, cog-wheel, long-boat and fish, 49mm (BDM –). Very fine, rare; with loop for suspension on the edge (£30-40)

During the 19th century relations between Norway and Sweden were strained. Growing nationalism in Norway and increasing wealth made the country resentful of its dependent status. In 1905 the union with Sweden was peacefully dissolved, and a Danish prince, Carl, taking the name Haakon VII, was elected king of Norway on 7 June
