Johann Friedrich Böttger (1682-1719), alchemist, the first European to discover how to make porcelain. His discovery, in 1708, led to the establishment of the first European royal porcelain manufactory at Meissen, near Dresden, in 1710. Production of Meissenware was revitalized in the early 1920s, with the issue of coins and medals in either brown Böttger or white biscuit porcelain becoming an inherent part of the business
