France, The Battle of loigny, 1870, a very large cast armorial maquette, unsigned, French troops engaging the Prussians positioned behind trees, surrounded by the heads of 12 French generals in medallions with armorial bearings, kneeling female figure and lion below, legend PATAY 2 DÉCEMBRE 1870, ropework border, 68.5cm. A magnificent decorative work, attractively patinated, extremely fine and extremely rare; with hook for suspension on the back (£350-450)

Commemorates the battle between Franco-Prussian forces south of Loigny (dép. Eure et Loire), when, in bitterly cold snowy weather, the French, under General Chanzy, lost 20,000 troops while retreating to Patay (dép. Loiret), a village north of Orléans. The battle was the climax of the campaign prior to the siege of Paris.
