France, A. Gilbert, 1860, a uniface cast bronze portrait medal by H.-M.-A. Chapu, bust left in hat, A GIBERT PAYSAGISTE around, 131mm (BDM I, 408). Softly modelled, about very fine, very rare and an important early Belle Époque work (£80-100)

Henri-Michel-Antoine Chapu (1833-91), sculptor, medallist and goldsmith from La Mée (dép. Seine-et-Marne), one of the most important later 19th century medallic artists who executed this work of the landscape artist Gilbert while in Rome in 1860.
