British, Glasgow Academy, an engraved oval silver medal formed from two plates joined at the rim, unsigned, inscribed (French Department, Highest Class, Master Dux, Louis A.J. Barbe, Session 1898-99), 46 x 43mm. Extremely fine; with ornate suspension loop attached (£40-50)

Louis Auguste Barbé, linguist and writer, lived at Dunbar; born in Guernsey and educated in Paris, he was Professor of English at the Collège Jean Bart, Dunkirk before moving to Paisley Grammar School. In 1884 he was appointed head of modern languages at Glasgow University, a post he held until 1918. Sold with a related press cutting
