Gambling, Gambling: London, John Lister, Halfcrown token, 1792, in silver, by J. Milton, arms, reverse JL cypher, edge plain, 32mm (D & W 313/57; MG 1090). Reverse from a slightly rusty die, extremely fine and toned, very rare (£140-180)

Ex Cokayne and Noble (Pt II, 1046).

John Lister kept a gambling house in Norris Street, Haymarket, where the silver strikings of his token passed for halfcrowns. Lister was summoned on 24 Sept. 1792 and fined £700 ‘for keeping a gaming house’. See Back Cover Plate
