Cornwall 19th Century, Cornwall, Falmouth, Burton’s Old Curiosity Shop, brass check, c.1890, restamped from a Japanese brass Sen (J & V K 602), legend, reverse KNOWN THROUGHOUT THE CIVILIZED WORLD, etc, edge plain, 28mm (Pridmore, SNC 1961, pp.6-7; Mayne/Williams 2). About very fine, scarce (£30-40)

John Burton (1840-1907) first set up in business in Falmouth market in 1862. In 1882 he moved to the site in Market Street which became known as Burton’s Curiosity Shop, where he enjoyed the patronage of the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII).
