D.F.M. London Gazette 15 August 1944. The following details are taken from the original award recommendation: ‘Flight Sergeant Armstrong has been continuously on operations against the enemy since July 1942. During this period he has made 30 operational sorties of which eighteen were anti-submarine patrol, the majority hundreds of miles from land in conditions of foul winter weather testing courage and endurance alike, and twelve were bombing raids of which all were on heavily defended German targets and no less than six were against the capital City itself. Throughout all this extended tour his application to his air gunner’s duties has been exemplary and his unvarying display of keenness, cheerfulness and offensive spirit has been an inspiration to all his comrades.
