Distinguished Service Medal, G.VI.R. (Temp. Sto. P.O. C. W. Hoad, C/K.65965) in case of issue, extremely fine £550-650

D.S.M. London Gazette 18 September 1945: ‘For gallantry, skill and devotion to duty whilst serving with H.M. Ships Saumarez, Venus, Verulam, Virago, Vigilant, Queen Elizabeth and Emperor on the East Indies Station, in operations which brought about the destruction of a Japanese heavy cruiser of the Nachi class and the probable destruction of a Japanese destroyer.’

The following details are taken from the original award recommendation: ‘Stoker Petty Officer Temporary Clifford William Hoad, H.M.S.
Virago. Stoker Petty Officer Hoad was in charge of the After Damage Control Party. Immediately after the explosion he helped put out two small fires. He then organised his party and saw all compartments aft were inspected. When it was apparent that no serious leakage was taking place he commenced to strip the ship’s side lagging and plug the holes on the water-line showing considerable ingenuity and resource. Stoker Petty Officer Hoad’s cheery confidence and complete grip of the situation throughout were most re-assuring. He was a power of strength.’ Sold with copies of the original Action Report and award recommendation.
