The following details are taken from the original award recommendation: ‘ In a series of actions on the 22nd/23rd December 1944, H.M. Ships [M.T.B’s 693, 694, 755 and 772] destroyed at least 2 E-boats and damaged others. They were handled with skill and courage, maintaining close contact with the enemy for more than a quarter of an hour, a meritorious achievement in view of the enemy’s high speed.’
‘Able Seaman James Robertson Barr, Gunner, Twin Oerlikon Gun No. 1, M.T.B. 693. This rating displayed great coolness and a high degree of courage. His alertness and skill in controlling his gun, resulting in effectively damaging the enemy at the outset of the engagement, was a considerable contribution to ensuring the successful result of the action. This rating has repeatedly shown conduct of the highest order in the many actions in which he has taken part.’
