John Mackintosh was born at Croy, Nairn, and enlisted into the Royal Engineers in June 1883. He served in South Africa and was engaged in the Bechuanaland Expedition of 1884-85, for which no medals were awarded. He served in Sierra Leone and in Mauritius prior to the Boer War, and subsequently in Ceylon. He was awarded his L.S. & G.C. medal in June 1901, and was discharged in November 1908. The award of the M.S.M. was announced in Army Order 76 of 1947. Sold with copy service papers.
