David Pratt was born at Markinch, Fifeshire, on 28 September 1775. He enlisted as a Private in the Fife Fencible Cavalry in April 1795, rising to the rank of Sergeant by the time he joined the 16th Lancers in March 1800. He served as Sergeant until December 1806, and thereafter as Troop Quarter-Master until 11 November 1811, when he purchased a Cornetcy in his regiment. He became Lieutenant, again by purchase, on 29 October 1812.

Genl.
