Company Sergeant Major Francis Kerrigan was born in Crinkle, Birr, King’s County and enlisted at Birr, King’s County. He died of wounds France and Flanders 25 August 1916 whilst serving with the 2nd Battalion, Leinster Regiment. (M.M. London Gazette 10 October 1916).

C.S.M. Kerrigan is mentioned several times in Stand To, A Diary of The Trenches, by Captain F.C. Hitchcock, M.C.. The following information is extracted from this book ‘24 August 1916....We were subject to heavy shell-fire all morning. C.S.M. Kerrigan got badly wounded in the arm....27 August 1916....News came from 73rd Ambulance saying that C.S.M. Kerrigan, M.M., had died of his wounds. Later in the morning his brother came along to enquire for him (R.S.M. W. Kerrigan, D.C.M., 2nd Battalion, Leinster Regiment, attached 13th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment) and I had the unpleasant duty of breaking the sad news.’
