A good Boer War D.S.O. group of seven awarded to Lieutenant Colonel S. R. L. White, Leinster Regiment

Distinguished Service Order, V.R., silver-gilt and enamels, lacking top bar brooch; Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 3 clasps, Cape Colony, Transvaal, Wittebergen (Major, D.S.O., 1/Leinster Regt.); King’s South Africa 1901-02, 2 clasps (Major, D.S.O., 1/Leinster Regt.) both with officially impressed naming; 1914-15 Star (Lt. Col., D.S.O., Leins. R.); British War and Victory Medals (Lt. Col.); Coronation 1911; together with original warrant for D.S.O.; corresponding miniatures, the miniature D.S.O., in gold and enamels, and with unusual ‘E.VII.R.’ reverse, the full size and miniature medals contained in an attractive contemporary glazed mahogany display frame, 34cm, by 26cm, the arched top centre bearing a silver Leinster Regiment badge, some enamel damage to wreath of first, otherwise generally good very fine or better (14) £1200-1500

Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Robert Llewellyn White, D.S.O. was born at Blackrock, County Dublin on 4 June 1863. He was privately educated, and joined the Leinster Regiment, 6 May 1885; becoming Captain 14 July 1891. He was Adjutant, Militia, 5 December 1894 to 31 August 1896. White served in the South African War, 1900-1902; he took part in operations in the Orange River Colony, including action of Wittebergen and the surrender of Prinsloo’s Commando (D.S.O.presented by the King 18 December 1902 and Mentioned in Lord Roberts Despatch 10 September 1901). He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel 6 May 1911, and commanded the 1st Battalion, Leinster Regiment from 1911 to 1915, and took his battalion to France in November 1914; invalided home in March 1915; home service till June 1918, when he retired owing to ill-health.
