Lieutenant Colonel Francis Arthur Levis was commissioned into the Leinster Regiment on 26 April 1916; being promoted to Captain on 30 March 1918. His brother Private George Levis was killed on 4 November 1915 whist serving with the same Regiment. The following is extracted from Stand To, by Captain F. C. Hitchcock, M.C. ‘During the night there was some sniping on ‘D’ Company’s front. Pte. Levis, brother of 2nd Lieut. Levis of the 1st Battalion was shot. He was a stretcher bearer in ‘D’ Company. In the early hours next morning C.S.M. Brereton sniped two huns to make up for Levis being killed.’

Levis had the honour of carrying the Regimental Colour at the ceremony held on 12 June 1922 when the Leinster Regiment was formerly disbanded, the Colours being handed to King George V who placed them in the safety of St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. He is noted in the 1943 Army List as being a Lieutenant Colonel, Manchester Regiment, serving with the Home Guard. Sold with further research detail.
