Daniel Webb was born at Little Thurlow, near Haverhill, Suffolk, and was a shoemaker when he enlisted for the 30th Foot at Cambridge on 29 June 1838. He served abroad in Bermuda for 2 years 11 months, Cephalonia 2 years 1 month, Gibraltar 1 year 1 month, and in Turkey and the Crimea for 1 year 11 months. He transferred to the Royal Canadian Regiment in May 1858, and served another 7 years 4 month in North America before returning to England where he was discharged on 31 October 1863.
